Transition gap calculator
Two numbers decide whether a lower-paid role is affordable: does the new budget balance, and is the move funded. This works them separately, because they fail differently.
Method and assumptions are set out in Can You Afford a Lower-Paid Nursing Role?. Nothing you type leaves your browser — there is no server call, no storage, and no account.
1. Monthly margin
Use monthly net (take-home) amounts. If your pay is not monthly, convert it first.
Income reduction
—
Per month. Also shown per year.
Ongoing margin
—
Positive means the new budget balances on its own.
2. Minimum opening cash
Add every expected deposit and outflow between now and the end of the transition. The schedule starts at zero and excludes savings you intend to use, so the answer is what you need in the bank on day one — not a net total.
| Date | What | In / out | Amount | Remove |
|---|
Minimum opening cash
—
Largest cumulative shortfall in the schedule. Zero if it never goes below zero.
Lowest point
—
Date the low point is reached.
This is a modelled minimum, not a guarantee. Record your emergency reserve separately and compare it with the requirement afterwards.
