Student Loans for Nurses
I'm an RN, not a financial advisor, accountant, or attorney, and I do not write as one. This article is information for general education only. It is not financial, tax, or legal advice, and nothing in it constitutes a binding agreement or creates a professional relationship. Before you act on any figure or strategy here, take it to an accredited professional — an accountant, a financial planner, or an attorney — who can see your actual situation.

Nursing school debt behaves differently from other debt. Part of it may be federal and part private. The assistance programs are separate from each other, they define employment differently, and one of them counts loan types the others exclude.
That is why this section refuses the phrase "nurse loan forgiveness." There is no single program behind it. There are several, each with its own eligibility test, and the useful work is deciding which one deserves a closer look for your loans and your job.
What this section covers
Which loans you actually hold, and how to tell federal from private. The assistance programs nurses ask about, screened separately rather than summarized together. The difference between federal consolidation and private refinancing, which are not interchangeable and do not lead to the same place. What changing your employment arrangement does to eligibility, before you change it. What an employer benefit is worth once its conditions are read. And what to do when a payment genuinely does not fit.
The distinction worth knowing first
Private education loans are not eligible for PSLF. That does not make "private loans qualify for nothing" true. Nurse Corps guidance counts qualifying private commercial nursing education loans, inside a specific set of boundaries that also excludes some loans people assume are covered. The two statements are not in conflict; they belong to different programs.
